The first and most important thing is to discuss your needs and priorities, and once we’ve established these we can draw up a plan for the bathroom that you are happy with, whether designing from scratch or just replacing existing fittings.

12 dos and don'ts of bathroom renovations

A well done bathroom renovation can completely transform a bathroom into something not only beautiful but also functional. That being said the process involves various stages in order to complete it correctly and with longevity. Bathroom renovations should only be done every couple of years if done correctly by your bathroom fitters, this involves carefully planning the process and hiring the correct trades men. Modern bathroom designs have become very popular and have almost become a trend in itself, some of the latest bathroom trends include a walk in shower, bold tile colours, brass sanitary ware electric under floor heating and much more.  So what to do and what no to do during a bathroom renovation?

DO hire a builder along with a plumber for the process of your bathroom renovation. Plumbers are there to run the pipe work, install fixtures and do the plumbing work involved with the bathroom design process as their trade name says, however a builder will project manage the job and with their experience the project will run a lot smoother and potentially save you unnecessary costly mistakes. A builders knowledge will help you avoid unnecessary mistakes. A bathroom refurbishment if done well can last you many years therefore it is crucial to have good bathroom fitters to help you along the way.

DO NOT cut corners on key materials. Whilst a lot of us are on a budget and it is good to be efficient, a common mistake is skimping out on items which get used the most meaning in the long run these will have to be replaced causing more hidden costs.  Cheap materials are more likely to scratch and decay. It is advised to use stainless steel materials where possible as these will last you a lot longer, making your bathroom renovation a lot more cost efficient.  

DO save on unnecessary luxury  items such as toilets , bath tubs etc. as you don’t require to have motion activated lids on toilets or a porcelain bath but it is crucial to invest in other items .

DO take time to finalize the bathroom design and sanitary ware,  this follows on to the bathroom design and installation of all the products and materials, if correct items are chosen the first time you will not be left having to replace or re-install these in a short time allowing you to avoid unwanted costs.

DO select surfaces which are bathroom appropriate.  It is important to remember that bathroom tiles need to be non-slippery due to safety reason. The importance of the right and durable materials is key to a well designed and functional bathroom. Porcelain tile is a great choice as it’s much harder than ceramic tiles and is available in a vast choice of sizes, shapes, colour and patterns.  


DO choose tiles wisely. Designing a modern stylish bathroom often involves feature walls, alcoves and tile features, these also need to be suitable for those specific needs. Some textured stone tiles are not suitable for showers and can only be used on feature walls and therefore it is good to get advice on this prior to making any decisions and purchases.

DONT rush choosing your bathroom fitters. Should you decide to invest in more luxury items which mean a bigger price tag make sure you have trusted bathroom filters to handle these, for example fitting a bath which is of a valuable price, it is crucial this process is done with caution as this limit any potential damage and additional costs. Vanity countertop surfaces are just as important, popular options include quartz, granite, Corian and the more luxury option of marble. 

DO NOT buy products online without seeing them in person.  Online shopping is something we turn to all the time to save us time, however whilst going online can be a great tool to research products and design ideas, it is strongly advisable to see finishes and products in person prior to buying them as they may appear different on your screen and in person.  This is especially relatable to finishes, a light grey quartz vanity top might look a completely different shade in real life to what you thought it did online.

DO  visit a showroom before you buy.  This procedure is highly advisable and also applicable to actual bathroom products and sanitary ware, often items get delivered straight to the building sight and installers proceed with it you want to make sure that your new shower installation is exactly what you wanted but also of the quality that is durable.
